Construction in ICF

Construction in ICF (Insulated Concrete Forms) is a building system that uses blocks made of EPS (expanded polystyrene), which is composed of 98% air and 2% plastic. After assembly, these blocks are filled with reinforced concrete, resulting in high thermal insulation and complete airtightness.

ICF allows for a significant reduction in construction waste compared to traditional masonry, approximately 10 times less, and a large portion of this waste can be reused (about 40%). Additionally, EPS is a harmless material that is recyclable and reusable.

We work with Euromac2 blocks and mainly Styrostone because they provide us with the most guarantees. The Styrostone blocks come in two sizes:

The 250mm Styrostone blocks consist of:

  • 50mm Graphite EPS on the interior side,

  • 150mm Reinforced Concrete in the core,

  • 50mm Graphite EPS on the exterior side.

The 350mm Styrostone blocks consist of:

  • 50mm Graphite EPS on the interior side,

  • 150mm Reinforced Concrete in the core,

  • 150mm Graphite EPS on the exterior side.

Our slabs are also constructed with ICF using EPS vaults that can have a height of 150mm or 200mm, iron trusses, and 80mm of reinforced concrete with mesh reinforcement.

The ICF blocks alone replace the typical formwork, significantly reducing the associated equipment costs, and can be considered as insulated concrete formwork blocks.

Construction in ICF allows for a constant average temperature throughout the year and significant energy savings. The ICF blocks are made of a very lightweight material, easy to handle, and quick to assemble, which speeds up the construction process. They have a built-in interlocking system and do not require any other type of fastening, eliminating the need for maintenance.

All our constructions include a Mechanical Controlled Ventilation (MCV) or Double Flow Ventilation, which ensures that the indoor air is always fresh and free from humidity or odors. This system, combined with the excellent thermal properties of the structure, maintains the indoor temperature between 18 and 22 degrees Celsius almost all year round, as long as certain precautions are taken, such as not leaving any external windows or doors open and avoiding direct sunlight entry.

Our Blocks

Our 35cm blocks are the ones we most commonly apply and recommend due to their excellent thermal characteristics:

  • R-Value (Thermal Resistance) = 7.05m2K/W

  • U-Value (Thermal Transfer) = 0.140W/mK
